DIY Shampoo & Conditioner

I've been making my own shampoo for 2 years now and I couldn't be happier with the results! My hair has never looked better even after having 3 children and being at the ripe age of 40.

I consider myself an all-natural kind of gal with almost everything and try to make as much as possible home made. After all, home made is always best (and cheaper too!). Store-bought shampoos are not only expensive and full of toxins, they have the exact opposite effect of what you're trying to achieve. There is no need to wash your hair every day or even every other day for that matter and a smooth silky mane is easily attainable with just a few key ingredients. Going this route will not only save you money, but your hair will be at its full potential AND it only takes minutes to make. I wash my hair twice a week (every 3 days).

Recipe that I use:

*updated - use equal parts water & castile soap for better lather

1 part liquid castile soap (1 cup or more if making a bottle of shampoo)

2 parts water (2 cups or double castile soap to fill shampoo bottle

15-20 drops of essential oil (for my hair type, which tends to be a little more oily, I use either lavender/lemon/orange/rosemary/tea tree/sandalwood)

1 tsp of either avocado/jojoba/grapeseed/olive oil (if filling a shampoo bottle)

Pour into an old shampoo bottle that has a squirt lid or foam pump as this shampoo is very liquid. Shake shampoo bottle before every use. For hair that is less oily use peppermint/eucalyptus/lemon/sage/rosemary/tea tree essential oil.

* Tea tree oil is also great for dandruff and warding off lice

Conditioner
1 part raw unfiltered apple cider vinegar

10 parts water

add a few drops of your favourite essential oil (optional)

* This will give your hair a great shine & won't make it smell like vinegar I promise - just don't use more than 3 times/week or you might get a little too much shine.

There will be a transition period where your hair will be "greasy" for at least 2 weeks while your ph levels balance out (detoxing from the chemicals in your everyday shampoo). For me it took almost 5 and for some it could take up to 6 weeks, but the results are totally worthwhile.

Some people only wash their hair in a baking soda and water paste a few times a month and rave about the results. Now that's what I call cheap and efficient!

Another recipe I like to use sometimes:

1 part coconut milk

1 part castile soap

10-20 drops of my favourite essential oil (if filling a shampoo bottle)

This shampoo mixture only has a shelf life of 4 weeks

Help with Dandruff Shampoo

1 cup castile soap

1 cup water

1 tsp jojoba or grapeseed oil

1 tbs of acv (apple cider vinegar)

3 tbs apple juice

6 finely ground cloves OR 10 drops of teat tree oil

Try lightening your hair naturally this summer with these different combinations - sit in the sun for 30 min. then wash hair out

1 part lemon juice, 1 part distilled water

1 part acv, 1 part distilled water

strong cup of chamomile tea cooled

1 part honey, 1 part olive oil OR 1 part honey, 1 part vinegar

baking soda paste with water and baking soda (make sure it's not too thick or too thin)

Thanks for stopping by!
